After having a swimming pool in my backyard for 18 years, the constant upkeep and repairs were getting out of control.
Faced with $30,000 worth of repairs and $4,000 of annual upkeep, enough was enough. We looked into pool removal and for $10,500 we decided to demo our swimming pool and create a whole new backyard! (future videos will cover this).
It was a tough decision, but since two of our three kids had basically out grown the pool (yes, unfortunately this happens), amortizing the cost of repairs (massive leaks, equipment, lighting, controls, and concrete deck repair, etc) over a dozen or so swims a year by one kid and a couple of friends made very little economic sense.
However, a pool demo is not a matter to be taken lightly. Filling a pool incorrectly can create something far worse - a "zombie pool". Since they don't drain, these so called zombie pools can literally rise up out of the ground (thus, the name) and cause tremendous property damage.
A proper pool demo should be soil engineered, permitted, and done by an experienced demolition company (we hired Kennah Construction as our pool removal contractor. They performed superbly).
